The 2024-2025 season for the Miami Hurricanes men's basketball team hasn't gone according to plan.
After three wins to start the season, the Hurricanes spiraled out of control, losing their next seven games. Sitting at a 4-8 record, Miami has simply underperformed and will now deal with another rather shocking development.

According to Michelle Kaufman of the Miami Herald, legendary head coach Jim Larranaga will step down as the program's head coach. The 75-year-old has likely coached his last game, as multiple reports have indicated that Larranaga has decided that it is time for a change.
The ACC has lost some outstanding coaches over the last decade, as Larranaga joins that list with this sudden announcement.
Since the conclusion of the 2016-17 season, the ACC has lost the following head coaches:

Larranaga started his head coaching career at Bowling Green, leading the program from 1986 to 1997. He then accepted the head coaching job at George Mason, a place where he made history.
Under his direction, the 2005-2006 team shocked the world by making a run to the Final Four. Tar Heel fans don't need a reminder of the fact that Larranaga and the Patriots knocked off the then defending champion UNC basketball program on their way to that Final Four appearance.
A few years later, Larranaga was tabbed to take over at Miami, a place where he once again would make history. He is the program's all-time winningest head coach, leading the Hurricanes to a Final Four appearance during the 2022-2023 season.
As we've seen with other older head coaches, the ever-changing world of college athletics has seemed to play a significant role in the decisions made by these legendary head coaches. At 75 years old, Larranaga, similar to the likes of Roy Williams and Mike Krzyzewski (among others), likely felt like it was simply time to step away, given all the circumstances surrounding college athletics.
Larranaga put together a heck of a career and will go down as one of the best coaches in college basketball history. His legacy should be remembered by his success at all three of his head coaching stops, as not many coaches can say that they've successfully turned multiple programs around, leading two of them to Final Four berths.
While the college basketball world should be sad about his departure, fans should be thankful for his contributions to the sport.
Another legend has decided to hang it up, leading to more coaching movement among the ACC.
