The transfer portal is great when it benefits you but is brutal when it doesn't.

North Carolina isn't alone in terms of losing players. In fact, some of the brightest stars in the country (example Audi Crooks), have declared that they will seek other opportunities this offseason.

The Tar Heels already lost a fan favorite in a very surprising announcement, and now are set to lose a promising freshman who will look to unlock her true potential with another program.

Taliyah Henderson enters the transfer portal

On social media, freshman Taliyah Henderson announced her intention to enter the transfer portal.

After missing extended time during her high school career due to injury, Henderson was expected to need some time to develop once she arrived on campus. There was no doubt that she has an insane amount of potential, as her high-motor, athleticism and energy show every time she's on the court.

However, she was limited in terms of her role during her true freshman season, and it felt like her role decreased dramatically in bigger games.

To add some context, Henderson played less than 10 minutes in each of her final six games, with her only double-digit playing time coming in the first round of the NCAA Tournament (a game UNC won by 31 where Henderson saw 10 minutes of action).

This decision seems more like one that is focused on finding a bigger role moving forward.

Of course, this is not a UNC issue. This is a issue that every single program faces now on a yearly basis. Players have the luxury of testing the waters in search of a new opportunity, and the schools they are leaving have the chance to search the transfer portal for players to help fill the void.

As much as we would love to see every player return for the UNC women's basketball program, this unfortunately is the new reality in college athletics. The good news is, we know what Courtney Banghart can do on the recruiting trail, as it's certain she will find the right pieces to help fill the voids from departures this offseason.
