This offseason, Bill Belichick and the UNC football program once again had to revamp its linebacker unit.
Fortunately, the Tar Heels were able to bring in some veteran transfers who should make immediate impacts, including Richmond transfer Peyton Seelmann.
UNC football newcomer projected to make an immediate impact for the Tar Heels
A Mechanicsville, Virginia native, Seelmann spent his first two collegiate seasons with the Spiders. During the 2025 season, he earned First Team All-Patriot honors, leading the Spiders with 120 tackles, a mark that ranked second in the Patriot League and eighth nationally.
Heading into his junior season, Seelmann is expected to be one of the nation's best at his position, as he's earned national recognition ahead of his first year at North Carolina.
Peyton Seelmann named to the Dick Butkus Award watchlist
Seelmann was one of 9 linebackers from the Atlantic Coast Conference to be named to the annual Dick Butkus Award watchlist, an award that's presented annually to the nation's top linebacker. Each year, 51 players are selected for the watchlist, a number that honors the iconic No. 51 that Butkus wore during his Hall of Fame career.

It shouldn't surprise anyone to see Seelmann on this list. When you're one of the nation's best tacklers, you're going to draw attention, regardless of which program you play for. Let's face it: if you can record 20 tackles in a single game, you're pretty dang good at finding the football (regardless of the level of competition).
Now, with two defensive gurus in Bill and Steve Belichick, the sky is the limit for just how good he could be in Chapel Hill.

Seelmann is one of those guys that you watch play and simply say, "yeah, that's a Bill Belichick type of player." When they recruited him this offseason, the Tar Heels must have already had a plan laid out for how he could immediately impact the defensive unit, as he'll be one of the newcomers that fans will be excited to see compete once the regular season gets underway in just a few weeks.
The linebacker position will once again look a lot different this year, but the good news is that the Tar Heels have a handful of guys who can make that transition seemless heading into the new season.
Semifinalists for the 2026 Butkus Award will be announced on October 28, followed by the finalists on November 20. The winner will be revealed during the week of December 7. Inclusion on the preseason watch list is not required to win the award, as players can earn their way on (and off) the list at any time throughout the season.
