For 116 seasons, countless players and coaches have been given the opportunity to become part of something much bigger than themselves.
Tonight, the 117th season of Carolina basketball officially gets underway, and, as we know, this one is going to look a little different.
Carolina blue will still cover the Dean Smith Center. The argyle will still be there. The banners hanging from the rafters will still remind everyone of the legends who came before. Students will still wait for the first chance to "Jump Around," and "North Carolina" will still be written across the chests of the players who take the floor.
But when the Tar Heels officially begin their 2026-2027 season, Michael Malone will be leading the way.
For the first time in more than seven decades, North Carolina has handed the keys to its storied men's basketball program to someone with no prior connection to the Carolina basketball family. Malone is the first person to become UNC's head coach without having played for the Tar Heels or served as an assistant coach since Frank McGuire took the job in 1952.
Think about everything that has happened since.
National championships. Final Fours. All-Americans. Hall of Famers. Dean Smith. Roy Williams. Generations of players who became coaches, coaches who mentored future coaches, and a basketball family whose branches seemed to stretch forever.
For 74 years, there was always a direct connection to what came before. Now, UNC is starting something new.
Michael Malone is officially part of the Carolina family
Malone didn't play at North Carolina. He didn't sit on the Tar Heels' bench as an assistant, nor did he learn the "Carolina way" firsthand from one of the legendary coaches whose names are synonymous with the program.
However, none of that will matter when he walks onto the Smith Center floor on Monday night, because he is now one of them.
There is something special about being welcomed into the Carolina basketball family. We've heard countless former players describe it over the years. Once you're part of it, you're part of it forever.
Malone's path to Chapel Hill may differ from that of the men who immediately preceded him, but beginning tonight, his name becomes part of the story.
The wins and losses will come. Some moments will be worth celebrating, and others everyone will rather forget. Expectations will come, because North Carolina always has high expectations.
But before any of that happens, there are a few firsts to get out of the way.
The first introduction.
The first time hearing his name announced as the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels before a regular-season game, looking around the Dean Smith Center and realizing that this is now officially his home.
Malone won't be alone in experiencing that feeling.
For the new Tar Heels, tonight will create a memory that will stick with them long after their playing careers end.
Exhibitions provide a taste of what's to come, but this is different.
This one counts.
For the first time, they'll wait in the tunnel, knowing an actual game awaits on the other side. They'll hear the crowd. They'll see the Carolina blue. Then they'll run onto the Dean Smith Center floor as members of the UNC basketball program for a meaningful game.
It's one of those moments that can probably only be fully understood by the people fortunate enough to experience it.
Every player arrives in Chapel Hill with a different story. Some grew up dreaming about North Carolina. Others found their way here through recruiting, the transfer portal or a path they never could have predicted.
But once they put on that uniform and run through that tunnel, their stories become intertwined with UNC's.
They aren't watching the tradition anymore: they're responsible for carrying it forward.
A new chapter of the same story
There will understandably be plenty of curiosity surrounding this season.
What will Michael Malone's version of North Carolina basketball look like? How quickly will a roster filled with new faces come together? How will a coach with no previous ties to the program put his own fingerprints on one of college basketball's most recognizable brands?
Those answers will come eventually.
Tonight isn't about answering all of them.
It's about opening the book.
The 117th season of Carolina basketball represents something we haven't experienced in a very long time. It's a genuine new beginning, one that breaks from the coaching lineage that has defined the program for more than seven decades.
But a new era doesn't mean forgetting the old one.
That's the beauty of Carolina basketball.
Players, coaches and staff come and go. Years become decades, and eventually another generation of Tar Heels walks through the same tunnel once occupied by the legends whose jerseys now hang above them.
Yet the standard remains.
Michael Malone doesn't need to have played at North Carolina to understand what he's been entrusted with. The newest Tar Heels don't need decades of history with the program to become part of its family.
Starting tonight, this is their chapter.
And while coaches, staff, and players will always change, the words that have defined Carolina basketball never will.
Play hard.
Play smart.
Play together.
This, is Carolina basketball.
