The UNC football program has lost its first departure to the NFL, as Devontez ‘Tez’ Walker will be playing football on Sundays next fall.

UPDATE (December 8, 8:50 PM EST): According to Inside Carolina, the UNC football program seemed to believe that Tez Walker would ultimately return to Chapel Hill for another season.

The two sides were near an agreement on a NIL Deal for the 2024 season, but his decision changed when his camp was provided with a project that had him being selected within the first two rounds of the upcoming NFL Draft, news that made him decide to go pro.

Walker will not play for the UNC football program in the upcoming Duke’s Mayo Bowl on December 27.

Original Story:

When Devontez ‘Tez’ Walker arrived in Chapel Hill, many expected the Kent State transfer to not be on campus long.

After a chaotic beginning to his UNC football career, where his eligibility was denied to begin the 2023 season, Walker was finally granted eligibility by the NCAA.

When he finally got on the field, Walker was a stud, becoming Drake Maye’s top target. Over eight games played, the Charlotte, North Carolina native hauled in 41 passes for 699 yards and seven touchdowns as he made the most of his shortened season.

Now, it appears that Walker is ready to take on the NFL.

The Reese’s Senior Bowl announced on Thursday night that Walker accepted his invitation to compete in their annual event, which essentially confirms that he will enter the upcoming NFL Draft.

As stated earlier, it seemed like Walker was going to be a “one-and-done” for the UNC football program, as teaming up with Maye seemed to be one of the biggest reasons why he came to Chapel Hill in the first place. With Maye likely following him to the NFL, Walker will now look to use his week in Mobile, Alabama, to showcase his skills and prove that he belongs in the conversation among the top available wide receivers in this year’s class.

Walker has faced plenty of adversity, especially during his lone season in Chapel Hill. However, not many players have become fan favorites as quickly as he did, as he is a player that Tar Heels fans will definitely be rooting for as he moves on to the NFL.
