Behind a career night from Lexi Donarski, the UNC women’s basketball program got back in the win column with a victory over UNC Greensboro.

What a game for Lexi Donarski!

The graduate transfer scored 22 points on 7-9 shooting to lead the UNC women’s basketball program to a victory over UNC Greensboro, snapping the Tar Heels’ three-game losing streak.

North Carolina was up 20-4 in the first quarter, as the game had the makings of being a blowout. However, UNC Greensboro had other plans, as a strong second quarter, led by the three-point shooting of Kennedy Simpson, cut the Tar Heels lead to just two heading into the locker room.

The Tar Heels responded right out of the gate, putting up a 10-0 run to start the third quarter, but UNCG simply wouldn’t go away, as they made it a close contest deep into the fourth quarter.

Courtney Banghart’s team was finally able to pull away for good in the final minutes, securing the Tar Heels’ first win since November 24.

North Carolina struggled from deep in the first half, as they connected on just one of eight attempts from three-point range over the first 20 minutes of action. Donarski changed that narrative in the second half, making five three-pointers of her own as the Tar Heels shot 59% from the floor over the final two-quarters of play.

Playing without Kayla McPherson, Paulina Paris and Teonni Key, as well as Deja Kelly not being at full strength, the Tar Heels were short-handed in this one. However, behind Donarski’s career night, the UNC women’s basketball program had six players in double-figures, as the ones who played significant minutes contributed nicely on the offensive side of the ball.

North Carolina would have loved to have pulled away earlier in this one, but they will definitely take the victory given the circumstances that they were facing. The hope is that they can get closer to full strength before their much-anticipated matchup with UConn on Sunday afternoon in Connecticut.
