The first NET rankings of the 2023-2024 college basketball season have been released. Where does the UNC basketball program rank?

This season marks the sixth in which the NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET) is being used for college basketball.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the NET, check out thisarticle or the tweet below to find out more information.

As we’ve all heard in the past, the NET rankings go a long way in creating a team’s NCAA Tournament resume. The NET was a major factor in the UNC basketball program missing last year’s tournament, as the Tar Heels’ resume simply didn’t match up with other contending squads.

On Monday, the initial NET rankings list for the 2023-2024 season was released, as North Carolina comes in at No. 32 on the list.

Hubert Davis’ team is the third-highest-ranked ACC squad, trailing Clemson (18) and Virginia (27).

The quadrant system is based on the quality of wins and losses that a team puts together. Here’s a breakdown of how each quadrant is determined.

Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

As an example, at this point in the season, North Carolina is 1-1 in Quadrant 1 games, as the victory over Tennessee (No. 17) and loss to Villanova (No. 50) count as Quad 1 contests. Of course, this could change as the season goes along, but beating teams in the Quad 1 (and even Quad 2) consideration while avoiding losses to Quad 4 opponents is crucial in maintaining a strong NET ranking.

With a tough schedule over the next couple of weeks, the UNC basketball program can pad its resume by winning games over some ranked opponents.

The recipe is rather simple: if you take care of business on the court, the NET rankings will take care of itself.
