The UNC basketball program’s star freshman is coming off the best performance of his early Tar Heel career as he showcased his elite passing skills.

“Point to the Passer” has been a long-time tradition for the UNC basketball program. Dating back to the Dean Smith era, players who scored baskets were taught to point to the player who made the basket possible, a simple “thank you” as they proceeded back to the defensive side of the floor.

There was a lot of pointing to the passer going on in Chapel Hill on Wednesday night as Elliot Cadeau put on a display of elite passing that was one of the main highlights of a statement victory over No. 10-ranked Tennessee.

It’s not very often that a player who scored just five points and didn’t make a shot from the field draws so much positive attention. However, when you pass the ball like Cadeau can, it’s going to leave many comparing the freshman to UNC basketball greats that have come before him.

With legendary Ed Cota in the building, Cadeau put together his first 10-assist game, and what’s even more impressive is the fact that he didn’t turn the ball over once.

Oh, and this performance also came against the nation’s top-ranked defense.

The freshman joined a rather elite group of Tar Heels who have recorded 10+ assists in a single game over the last decade, as he joins current teammate R.J. Davis on the list.

For someone who is still supposed to be just a senior in high school, Cadeau possesses the basketball IQ that even upperclassmen would love to have. After struggling a bit with turnovers over his first three college games, Cadeau has been an elite ball-handler, recording 21 assists to just one turnover over the last three contests.

What is becoming evident (very quickly) is that the Tar Heels are a much better team when Elliot Cadeau is running the point. He has taken on the task of leading North Carolina’s fast-paced offense, as he has UNC basketball fans excited to see what he has in store throughout the rest of his freshman season in Chapel Hill.
