The UNC football program has quickly moved in on the transfer portal, as quarterback Max Johnson has committed to join the Tar Heels.

Well, that was rather quick.

On Tuesday, it was reported that the UNC football program has emerged as the frontrunner for Texas A&M transfer quarterback Max Johnson.

Just 24 hours later, Johnson committed to the program.

With Drake Maye’s likely departure, it felt inevitable that the Tar Heels would bring in a transfer quarterback to compete for the job with Connor Harrell. It was reported by Inside Carolina that quite a few quarterbacks reached out to North Carolina, but Mack Brown and his staff felt that Johnson was the right fit for the program.

Johnson began his career at LSU before transferring to Texas A&M. Last season, Johnson played in eight games for the Aggies, completing 62.1% of his passes while throwing 9 touchdown passes. His playing time was limited due to injury.

There’s still plenty of uncertainty at the quarterback position for the UNC football program, as it remains to be seen what the team’s plans are. At this point, it seems as if there will be another quarterback competition in Chapel Hill, as Harrell and Johnson will look to earn the QB1 spot.

As a graduate transfer, Johnson will be immediately eligible to play for his new team. When he arrives in Chapel Hill, he’ll have two available seasons to compete as a Tar Heel.

We expected a busy offseason for the UNC football program, and it didn’t take long for the action to get underway.
