Remember when former UNC Basketball player Cameron Johnson got traded from the Suns to the Nets? But how did he find out about the trade?

If you follow UNC Basketball players in the NBA closely, you may be aware that former Tar Heel Cameron Johnson was involved in a massive three-team trade in February of 2023. However, have you heard the details of the trade and how Johnson found out he was being traded?

In a recent appearance on the Run Your Race podcast, hosted by Johnson’s former UNC Basketball teammate Theo Pinson, they go through the sequence of events leading up to the trade and what happened that night. Including who told Johnson he was being traded…

It wasn’t Cameron’s agent, head coach, or general manager for the Suns or Nets that notified him of the trade he was involved in… it was his brother, former UNC basketball player Puff, and dad who called him around 1:00 AM to inform him of the trade.

They had seen the news on social media from sources breaking the news of the trade. Meanwhile, Cam hadn’t heard from anyone making the trade “official.” It wasn’t until later that he received a call at the same time from both the Suns GM and Nets GM informing him of the trade.

Imagine getting traded and your little brother finding out on social media before you are even notified… It just goes to show how crazy of a business the professional sports world can be, especially around the trade deadline.

Cam is still with the Nets this season and recently recovered from a calf strain injury. Click here to listen to the full Run Your Race Podcast with Johnson and Pinson.
