The UNC women’s basketball program will be without two key contributors when they take the court for its season opener on Wednesday night.

Just prior to the UNC women’s basketball program’s season opener against Gardner-Webb, it was announced that the Tar Heels will be without two players who are expected to be key contributors this season.

Courtney Banghart’s team will be without redshirt sophomores Kayla McPherson and Teonni Key, as first reported by R.L. Bynum of the Tar Heel Tribune.

Both players have been subject to missing time due to injury during the early parts of their respective UNC women’s basketball careers.

McPherson was limited to just 13 games a season ago as she was still rehabbing a right knee injury that she suffered during her high school career.

Key, who Bynum noted was seen wearing a walking boot, appeared in 28 games last season after redshirting her true freshman year after suffering a torn ACL in a preseason scrimmage.

The news is not ideal, to say the least, as the hope was that the UNC women’s basketball program would have its entire roster healthy to begin the new season. However, the hope is that the injuries are not too serious in nature, as the Tar Heels need both of these key contributors to be available throughout the majority of the 2023-2024 season.
