With his team facing elimination, former UNC baseball star Zac Gallen did something that has never been done in Major League Baseball history.

The Arizona Diamondbacks were facing elimination, as they trailed 3-1 in the World Series to the Texas Rangers.

In hopes of keeping their season alive, the Diamondbacks turned to former UNC baseball star Zac Gallen.

Although Arizona came up short in its quest to continue its season, Gallen’s performance was simply one for the record books.

Gallen took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, as he became the first starting pitcher in World Series history to allow no hits through six full innings with his team on the brink of elimination.

Corey Seager, the eventual World Series Most Valuable Player, would ruin the no-hit bid with a shift-beating single to start the seventh inning, as he would eventually score in the frame to give the Rangers the lead for good.

The former Diamond Heel ended his night throwing 6.1 innings of three-hit baseball, as he was unfortunately charged with the loss in the deciding Game 5. Although the season didn’t end as he or the Diamondbacks had hoped, this is a season that will always be a historic one for the franchise and Gallen.

Gallen most definitely deserved the round of applause that he received as he walked off the mound for the final time during the 2023 season.
