UNC Women’s Basketball: Health will definitely be the Key
Our UNC women’s basketball player previews continue with a player who could be on the verge of becoming a breakout candidate.
Heading into her redshirt sophomore season, Teonni Key has the makings of being an impact player for the UNC women’s basketball program.
Key’s career in Chapel Hill didn’t start as planned (we’ll get into that in a little bit), but things are looking positive for the Cary, North Carolina native.
As we inch closer to the start of the 2023-2024 college basketball season, let’s take a look at how Key can be a key player for the UNC women’s basketball program this season.
2022-2023 Season In Review
After missing her true freshman season due to a torn ACL, Key returned last season after rehabbing her injury.
As a redshirt freshman, Key appeared in 28 contests, as she averaged 2.4 points and 2.4 rebounds per game while playing just over 10 minutes per contest.
Her Tar Heel debut was a memorable one, as she scored 13 points in a victory over S.C. State. She may have been limited in terms of how much she could be utilized, Key showcased some skills that will earn her more playing time moving forward.
What to Expect in 2023-2024
As she’s now more than a full year recovered from her ACL injury, a healthy Teonni Key is trending towards earning a much bigger role for this year’s squad.
During the team’s ‘Live Action’ scrimmage, Key was one of the notable performers, as she left Tar Heel fans anxious to see what she could bring to the table as a fully healthy participant.
Bold Prediction
Be prepared to see an increase in production from Teonni Key.
Expect not only Key to be more of a factor in terms of minutes, but her production statistically is ready to take a big jump as well. She may not be a starter on this team right away, but if she can stay healthy, that all might change quicker than we all think.
