Our UNC women’s basketball 2023-2024 player previews continue with Indya Nivar, a sophomore transfer who shouldn’t be forgotten.

Courtney Banghart and the UNC women’s basketball program brought in some high-profile transfers this past offseason.

One of them is Indya Nivar, a sophomore who returns to her home state after spending her freshman season at Stanford. Banghart and North Carolina’s coaching staff recruited Nivar during her high school recruiting process and came up short, but this time around, Nivar found her way to Chapel Hill.

Fans got to see a glimpse of what Nivar brings to the table during the team’s ‘Live Action’ event, as she has the makings of being an impact player for the UNC women’s basketball program moving forward.

Prior to North Carolina

There’s a reason why the UNC women’s basketball program recruited Nivar during her high school career.

During her senior season at Apex Friendship High School, Nivar was the North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year and was named Ms. Basketball as she led her team to a state runner-up finish.  She was a McDonald’s All-American and Jordan Brand Classic All-American while also having the opportunity to help USA Basketball capture a gold medal at the 2022 FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Argentina.

Nivar decided to commit to Stanford, as she averaged 3.2 points over 12.6 minutes per contest as a freshman. After one year at Stanford, Nivar entered the transfer portal as she made her way back to her home state of North Carolina in the process.

What to Expect in 2023-2024

During ‘Live Action,’ Nivar showcased her shooting ability, as she was one of the standouts of the much-anticipated event.

Nivar might not factor into the starting lineup, but she certainly should play a big role in Banghart’s regular rotation. Given her skillset and scoring ability, minutes off the bench should be available for Nivar, as her role could be even bigger than the one she played as a freshman at Stanford.

There’s a reason why Banghart and her coaching staff recruited Nivar as hard as they did (twice). It should be expected that they have a role in mind for her to fill over the next few seasons.

Bold Prediction

Among the guard talent that the UNC women’s basketball program possesses, Nivar is going to end up being a valuable weapon for the Tar Heels.

Bench scoring is crucial for good teams to have, and Nivar can provide just that. She might not lead the team in scoring, but expect her to make some big shots for the UNC women’s basketball in her return to her home state.
