UNC Football program turning to new duo for kickoff returns
With George Pettaway intending on redshirting, the UNC football program has to fill the void he left on the team’s kickoff unit.
When it was announced that George Pettaway intended on redshirting, it left the UNC football program with a void to fill.
Although he wasn’t earning many reps on the offensive side of the ball, he was serving as the team’s kickoff returner as Mack Brown and his staff had to figure out how to fill the position moving forward.
When the Tar Heels take the field on Saturday afternoon, we know who will get the first crack at the job.
Omarion Hampton and redshirt freshman Doc Chapman are now listed as the team’s starting kickoff returners on the most recent depth chart prior to the team’s second ACC game of the season against Syracuse.
Although it’s risky having Hampton, who is such an important part of the team’s offense, being tasked with potentially more workload, it could be a great opportunity for Chapman to showcase his playmaking ability.
Kickoff returns haven’t been common for the UNC football program, as they’ve only returned two kicks through four games. However, you never know when an opportunity will arise, as Hampton and Chapman will be called upon to potentially help set up good field position for Drake Maye and the offense to work with.
