At this point, it appears that George Pettaway’s future as a member of the UNC football program may ultimately be in doubt.

Since arriving in Chapel Hill prior to the start of the 2022 season, George Pettaway hasn’t found a way to be a consistent contributor on the offensive side of the ball.

As a freshman, Pettaway appeared in 11 games, recording 20 carries for 93 yards and two touchdowns. With veteran British Brooks back and the emergence of classmate Omarion Hampton, Pettaway has seen even less playing time this year, as he has just one reception on the season.

During training camp, the UNC football program had Pettaway take reps at the wide receiver position. However, it hasn’t translated to playing time, as now his future with the program is in question.

According to the UNC football program, Pettaway intends to redshirt for the 2023 season. He is expected to go through spring practices with the program and will make a decision on his future afterward.

If the Tar Heels need him, he will play this season. If they don’t, we’ve seen the last of Pettaway during the 2023 season.

There’s been plenty of talk about how talented the UNC football program’s running back room is, as last year’s leading rusher, Elijah Green, has even fallen down the depth chart. Of course, a lot could change in a year, as next spring could show Pettaway that there is room in the Tar Heels offense for him moving forward.

Based on his decision to redshirt, an eventual decision to transfer might be in the cards for the Suffolk, Virginia native.
