UNC Football: Josh Downs listed as starter for Colts
The Indianapolis Colts released an unofficial depth chart before their season opener, as a UNC football standout is among the starters.
Throughout his first NFL training camp, former UNC football standout Josh Downs has been actively competing for a starting job.
It was a battle between the rookie Downs and the veteran Isaiah McKenzie, a competition that has finally come to a close.
The organization released an unofficial depth chart that lists Downs as the starting slot receiver. Head coach Shane Steichen confirmed that Downs was named the starter, as he had some very positive things to say about his rookie receiver:
"“Just the growth he’s made through training camp and just his route-running ability and what he brings. He’s a speed guy. He’s got a great feel on how to run routes. He’s got great hands. I’m excited to see him go out and perform on Sunday.”"
Steichen went on to discuss how Downs’ chemistry and relationship with fellow rookie Anthony Richardson impacted this competition, as the Colts’ head coach believes the duo can build something special together:
"“Yeah, it’s been huge. Starting when they got drafted, you kind of saw it early on and then even in practice – routes, they’re always talking after a play. That to me is great growth of just being on the same page so they’re thinking the same way on certain routes and seeing it the same way. I think when you do that week in and week out and over the years as they grow together, I think it could be really special.”"
Fans of the UNC football program know what Josh Downs brings to the table, as he’s showcased it well during the early part of his NFL career. When the regular season officially gets underway this weekend, expect to see Downs a lot on the field as he looks to prove that he is more than ready to make an impact on Sundays.
