UNC Football wide receiver Devontez ’Tez’ Walker is still awaiting a decision regarding his eligibility from the NCAA. Where are we in the process?

First, it is absolutely ridiculous that we still have to report on this.

However, it’s important to note that UNC Football wide receiver Devontez ‘Tez’ Walker is still ineligible with no final decision from the NCAA. Just 24 hours before kickoff against South Carolina, we discovered that Walker was ruled out for the game due to the NCAA not hearing his appeal.

The NCAA had three weeks to hear Walker’s case and chose not to hear it until after week one. Better yet, Walker has been on Carolina’s campus since January 9th, and the NCAA changed the transfer rule on January 11th.

They had all summer to settle this before the season started, but now, here we are.

On Friday, September 1st, Walker took to social media to express his opinion on the situation and write a letter to NCAA President Charlie Baker.

During the South Carolina game, Walker saw support from several parties within and outside the UNC football program, from quarterback Drake Maye and celebrity Eric Church to the ESPN College GameDay set and ABC commentators Greg McElroy and Sean McDonough during the game.

It is expected that Walker will have a hearing in front of the NCAA appeals committee on Thursday, September 7th, in which they will speak with and listen to Walker’s stance on his situation. It isn’t certain that they will decide on Thursday, and if they do and they still rule him ineligible for the 2023 season, the case still may not be over. Walker and the UNC football program could pursue legal action next.

Mack Brown has been vocal about this situation to the NCAA and Charlie Baker. In his most recent public comments, Brown had this to say.

"They say they’re about helping kids, but all they’ve done is add to the very mental health issues Tez has been dealing with that made him want to get closer to home to begin with. You can’t say you’re about helping kids and then show a total disregard for the kids you’re supposed to be helping. It’s clear they are about process and not people."
