UNC Baseball: Orioles promote Mac Horvath to High-A

The former UNC baseball star is quickly making his way through the ranks within the Baltimore Orioles minor league system. 

For minor league baseball players, the process of working up the ranks could take some time.

In the case of former UNC baseball standout Mac Horvath, that process seems to be going quickly through his first few months as a professional.

Horvath has earned a second promotion in as many months, as the former Tar Heel is on his way to join the Baltimore Orioles’ High-A affiliate, the Aberdeen Ironbirds.

In 14 games with the Delmarva Shorebirds, the club’s Single-A affiliate, Horvath posted a .308 batting average with two home runs and five runs batted in. Although he struck out 17 times over 14 games, he drew his fair share of walks, earning 10 free passes over 64 plate appearances.

Defensively, Horvath saw most of his playing time at second base, but also saw game action at third base and right field. Having not played second base in Chapel Hill, this is an adjustment for the former Tar Heel, as the Orioles are providing him with opportunities to get meaningful game experience at the position.

Horvath’s offensive ability has been well on display, as it’s played a major role in his quick rise through the organization. Although he has plenty to accomplish at the minor league level, it’s very encouraging to see how he’s performed so far during the early stages of his professional career.

Who knows, it might not be long until Mac Horvath finds his way onto the team’s Major League roster.
