The Chancellor of the North Carolina Tar Heels had this to say regarding the approved expansion of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

After weeks of discussions, the Atlantic Coast Conference has officially agreed to add Stanford, California, and SMU to the mix beginning during the 2024-2025 school year.

Throughout the process, the North Carolina Tar Heels have been adamant about being against this expansion. On the night of August 31, a day before the conference was scheduled to vote again on the matter, a statement was issued by the university, citing how their stance on the potential expansion did not change.

However, their vote didn’t matter, as the conference received just enough votes (thanks to a change in voting stance from NC State) to make it happen.

With expansion officially happening within the Atlantic Coast Conference, North Carolina Chancellor Kevin M. Guskiewicz released the following statement:

"“I respect the outcome of today’s vote and welcome our new members to the ACC. My vote against expansion was informed from feedback I have gathered over the last several weeks from our athletic leadership, coaches, faculty athletic advisors, student-athletes, and a variety of other stakeholders who care deeply about our University and the success of our outstanding athletic program. I look forward to working with all our colleagues in the ACC to ensure excellence in academics and athletics- something our conference has long been known for.”"

Although the vote didn’t go in their favor, the University of North Carolina will support the expansion for the time being. It will remain to be seen if this move serves as another indicator that the university will look at other conferences to join at some point in the near future.
