UNC Football: Dazz Newsome waived by San Francisco 49ers
The former UNC football star wide receiver hasn’t appeared in an NFL game dating back to his rookie season in the league.
As the NFL season quickly approaches, former UNC football standout Dazz Newsome is now looking for a new home.
According to David Lombardi of The Athletic, Newsome was waived by the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday. The move was made to make room on the roster for another wide receiver, Anthony Miller, who was signed by the organization.
As a sixth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears, Newsome has struggled to find the field since his rookie season. The former Tar Heel hasn’t appeared in regular season action since then, as he has two career catches for a total of 23 yards.
Newsome saw some action this summer with the 49ers, as he made one catch for 9 yards over his 21 preseason snaps. However, the work he put in during training camp wasn’t enough, as he’ll now look to see if he can find a new landing spot before the regular season gets underway.
During his time with the UNC football program, Newsome was a dynamic playmaker who made a major impact on the Tar Heels offense. His best year was his junior season, where he hauled in 72 passes for 1,018 yards and ten touchdowns.
It might be difficult for Newsome to make an NFL roster at this point, but the hope is that someone will take a chance on him and give him the opportunity to show what he is capable of.
