The UNC football program received some unfortunate news, as rising junior Lejond Cavazos will be sidelined indefinitely due to injury.

After working his way into a starter’s role towards the end of the 2022 season, Lejond Cavazos was expected to build on that as an impact player in the UNC football program’s secondary this season.

However, it appears that the Tar Heels will be without Cavazos for the foreseeable future.

It was announced that Cavazos has suffered a lower-body injury, one that will require surgery. There is no timetable for the San Antonio, Texas native’s potential return to the field.

Cavazos isn’t the only Tar Heel undergoing surgery, as freshman offensive lineman RJ Grigsby also suffered a lower-body injury that will sideline him indefinitely.

Last season, Cavazos appeared in 11 games, starting the team’s final three contests. He recorded 18 total tackles, two pass breakups to go along with a tackle for loss. He was impressive in his first start as a Tar Heel, as he recorded three tackles and a pass breakup against NC State.

This is disappointing news for the UNC football program, as the hope was that Cavazos could help re-shape the team’s secondary, a unit that had its fair share of struggles last season. Even though there is no timetable for his return, the hope is that he’ll be able to return at some point this season to provide a boost for the Tar Heels secondary.
