UNC Football: Devontez Walker’s eligibility up in the air?
The UNC football program may have a problem on its hands, as transfer Devontez Walker’s eligibility might be in question for the 2023 season.
Just weeks before the college football season kicks off, the UNC football program may have a big issue on its hands regarding the eligibility of star transfer Devontez Walker.
Head coach Mack Brown told reporters that Walker’s waiver for immediate eligibility had been denied. This comes after it was originally granted by the NCAA.
As a two-time transfer, Walker had to apply for eligibility. He did not play at his first stop, NC Central, due to injuries and COVID-19 cancellations, and then proceeded to head to Kent State to restart his college football career. Brown went on to say that Kent State is fully supportive of Walker’s eligibility for the 2023 season.
According to Brown, Walker enrolled at North Carolina when the immediate eligibility rules were in effect in January. Two days later, the rules changed.
The UNC football program isn’t giving up hope, as a waiver appeal has been put into place. North Carolina is hopeful that their impact transfer will be available when they open up their 2023 against South Carolina in just a few weeks.
With the appeal status still up in the air, a lot rides on this decision for both Devontez Walker and the UNC football program. The final decision will have major implications however it plays out, as the Tar Heels are hopeful that it will play out in their favor.
