UNC Football: Carlos Mitchell Jr. decommits from North Carolina
After committing to the UNC football program just over a month ago, three-star athlete Carlos Mitchell Jr. has had a change of heart.
On June 11, Carlos Mitchell Jr. announced that he was “1000% committed” to Mack Brown and the UNC football program.
A little over a month later, Mitchell Jr. has elected to re-open his recruitment.
Speculation over the last couple of days has pointed in this direction, as it appeared that the Lake Wales, Florida native would elect to re-evaluate his options. He made it official on Sunday afternoon with the brief statement that was posted on his social media account.
A two-way standout at the high school level, the UNC football program originally recruited Mitchell Jr. as a defensive back. With his announcement, the Tar Heels now have 22 players committed to the Class of 2024, as the program still is among 247 Sports’ top 25 recruiting classes.
Although it is disappointing, it’s a decision that seemed likely over the last couple of days. At least Mack Brown and company will have time to look at some other options to help bolster the team’s secondary in this already large recruiting class.
Mitchell didn’t necessarily rule out the UNC football program in his re-opened recruitment, but based on what we know, it’s likely that the three-star athlete has plans to play college football elsewhere.
