The North Carolina Tar Heels Director of Athletics will be taking on a bigger role on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee.

Over the last three years, North Carolina Tar Heels Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham has served on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee.

Heading into the 2023-2024 season, Cunningham will be taking on a bigger role.

It was announced that Cunningham will be the vice-chair for next season working closely with this year’s chair, Southwestern Athletic Conference Commissioner Charles McClelland. The Tar Heels Director of Athletics will follow by being the chair of the committee during the 2024-2025 school year.

Among the individuals working with McClelland and Cunningham on this year’s committee include:

Greg Byrne (Alabama)
Barry Collier (Butler)
Mark Coyle (Minnesota)
Keith Gill (Sun Belt Conference)
Dave Heeke (Arizona)
Arthur Johnson (Temple)
Martin Newton (Samford)
Rachelle Paul (Saint Peter’s)
Jamie Pollard (Iowa State)
Tom Wistrcill (Big Sky Conference)

In a statement via the official University of North Carolina Athletics program, Cunningham expressed his excitement for this outstanding opportunity:

"“It’s an incredible honor to selected by my peers to chair this committee. During my tenure at North Carolina, I’ve seen my colleagues Ron Wellman from Wake Forest (2014) and Kevin White from Duke (2020) chair this group and admired them for having this great professional opportunity. To be able to follow in the footsteps of those men and others, including Charles McClelland, who I look forward to supporting this year, is quite the privilege.”"
