UNC Basketball: Jon Rothstein’s ACC Offseason Breakdown
How does Jon Rothstein view the UNC basketball program in his annual ACC Offseason Breakdown for the upcoming 2023-2024 season?
It’s never too early to look ahead to the upcoming college basketball season… right?
For Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, the countdown to the 2023-2024 season began as soon as the final buzzer sounded in the NCAA Tournament championship game.
Rothstein released his annual offseason breakdown for the ACC, as the college basketball analyst ranks the UNC basketball program as the third-best team in the conference. The Tar Heels, with a new-look roster, only trail Duke and Miami on the list.
"Projected Starting 5:G R.J. DavisG Elliot CadeauG Cormac RyanF Harrison IngramC Armando BacotProjected Bench: Seth Trimble, Jalen Washington, Zayden High, Paxson Wojcik, Jae’Lyn Withers, James OkonkwoKey Newcomers: Zayden High, Paxson Wojcik (Brown), Jae’Lyn Withers (Louisville), Cormac Ryan (Notre Dame), Harrison Ingram (Stanford), Elliot Cadeau, James Okonkwo (West Virginia)Key Losses: Pete Nance, Leaky Black, Dontrez Styles, Puff Johnson, Tyler Nickel, Justin McCoy, Caleb Love, D’Marco Dunn"
In terms of individual recognition, to no surprise, Armando Bacot was among the ACC Preseason First-Team selections. The UNC basketball star big man is joined by Kyle Filipowski (Duke), Norchad Omier (Miami) Blake Hinson (Pittsburgh), and Reece Beekman (Virginia) on the first team.
Rothstein did not include any Tar Heels among his 10 ACC breakout player candidates but did mention Harrison Ingram and Cormac Ryan among the 10 impact ACC transfers. Additionally, point guard Elliot Cadeau sits atop the 10 impact ACC freshman list.
It will be a different look for sure for Hubert Davis and the UNC basketball program this season, as some new faces will join forces with some returners in hopes of avenging the disappointing 2022-2023 season.
Regardless of what happened last season, the goal of the UNC basketball program remains the same: compete for a national championship.
