UNC Baseball: Tomas Frick drafted by New York Yankees
Tomas Frick became the third UNC baseball player selected as part of the 2023 MLB Draft, as he’s heading to the New York Yankees organization.
Three UNC baseball players drafted, three UNC baseball players drafted to American League East teams.
Tomas Frick became the latest Diamond Heel to be selected, as the New York Yankees took the Tar Heels’ backstop with their 15th-round pick. He follows former teammates Mac Horvath (Baltimore Orioles) and Max Carlson (Boston Red Sox) to the American League East Division.
Frick put together a tremendous junior season, a year in which he set new career highs in every statistical offensive category. He led the UNC baseball program in batting average (.322), hits (75), doubles (22), multi-hit games (24), and multi-RBI games (17) while ranking second on the team in OPS (.979), home runs (12), RBIs (60) and slugging percentage (.571).
To add to his offensive success, Frick was a consistent presence behind the plate, as he started all 59 games this season (56 of which were started at catcher).
This is a great opportunity for Frick, but a major loss for the UNC baseball program. It’s tough to find a catcher that possessed the ability to not only handle a pitching staff extremely well but also could provide a ton of offense as well.
There’s always a chance that Frick can elect not to sign and return to Chapel Hill for one more season, but it is the most likely scenario that he will elect to test his talents at the next level with the Yankees organization.
