The ace of the UNC baseball program has been selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 12th round of the 2023 Major League Baseball Draft.

Max Carlson has been a workhorse for the UNC baseball program over the last three seasons.

Now, the right-hander is set to take his talents to Boston.

Carlson was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 12th round (Pick No. 358) of the 2023 MLB Draft. He becomes the first Diamond Heel that the Red Sox have selected since 2015 (Trevor Kelley).

The Savage, Minnesota native threw 182 innings for the UNC baseball program, striking out 187 batters over that span. He developed into the Tar Heels’ Friday night starter, as he put together some big performances in Chapel Hill.

Due to some struggles during his junior season, Carlson was removed from the rotation during the middle of the 2023 season. However, he got back on track and re-joined the rotation, playing a big role in the team’s postseason run.

For an organization in need of pitching, the selection of Carlson at this point in the draft is a smart move. Although his most recent season wasn’t as good as he’d hoped it would be, there is still plenty of talent and potential to work with.

Carlson becomes the second UNC baseball player selected in the 2023 MLB Draft, joining Mac Horvath (Baltimore Orioles) as the Tar Heels that are heading to the big leagues.
