The UNC baseball commit is likely heading to the pros after being selected in the top five of the 2023 Major League Baseball Draft.

Heading into the start of the 2023 MLB Draft, it was expected that UNC baseball commit Walker Jenkins would be taking his talents to the pros.

After being selected with the fifth overall pick by the Minnesota Twins, the already slim chances of seeing Jenkins in Carolina Blue got even lower.

Jenkins, the two-time player of the year in the state of North Carolina, was the second high school prospect selected in this year’s draft. As the No. 5 overall selection, the approximate pick value sits at $7.14 million.

Although it would have been nice to have seen him pursue the college route, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Jenkins turning pro is the expected outcome. It’s highly doubtful that the Twins (or anyone else, for that matter) would have selected him that high without having some type of guarantee that he’d sign with the club.

Scott Forbes and the UNC baseball program will have to wait and see how the rest of the MLB Draft plays out in order to see how much it impacts their incoming recruiting class.
