UNC Softball: Maddie Holub named pitching coach
The UNC softball program has added a coach to its staff, one that has previous connections to the team’s newly-installed head coach.
Megan Smith Lyon has brought in a very familiar face to be the UNC softball program’s pitching coach.
The UNC softball program announced that Maddie Holub has been added to the coaching staff as an assistant coach. Holub will resume the role of pitching coach, replacing Chelsey Dobbins.
After taking the North Carolina job, it was expected that Smith Lyon would make some changes to not only the roster but her staff as well. It’s no surprise that she’s bringing her pitching coach along, one that spent the last five seasons working with her at Marshall.
Holub brings along an impressive resume, as Marshall won 165 games (.705 winning percentage), including 45 by shutout during her rein as the program’s pitching coach. This past season, the Thundering Herd led the Sun Belt in pitching with a league-best 1.62 ERA and 10 shutouts. Ace Sydney Nester was dominant, as she completed the conference’s pitching triple-crown with a 1.07 ERA, 27 wins to go along with 234 strikeouts.
Smith Lyon released a statement on the hiring of Maddie Holub:
"“I’m excited that Maddie is joining the Tar Heel family. I have seen first-hand the positive impact she has on all our players, especially the pitchers and catchers. She is extremely loyal, a tireless worker and an incredible role model for the young women she coaches. I can’t wait for her to get to work in Chapel Hill.”"
It’s a new era in UNC softball program history, as the team’s new coaching staff will look to get the program back to being one of the top teams in all of the country.
