UNC Basketball: Coby White expected to re-sign with Bulls
As a restricted free agent this offseason, the former UNC basketball standout is expected to remain with the Chicago Bulls.
With his rookie contract ending, former UNC basketball standout Coby White is set to hit the free agent market this offseason.
However, the Chicago Bulls have other plans.
First, the Bulls extended a qualifying offer to White, making him a restricted free agent. This allows the Bulls to match any offer that the former Tar Heel receives from other teams.
Even though the qualifying offer was given as a precaution in an effort to keep White, it looks as if the two sides will quickly agree to a deal once free agency begins.
White is expected to sign a three-year extension with the Bulls, according to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports. The deal will reportedly be worth “north of” $30 million dollars.
The former UNC basketball standout’s future in Chicago was in question, especially given that White looks to become a starter once again. During the 2022-2023 season, White appeared in 74 games while making just two starts as he’s essentially been a reserve for each of the past two seasons with the franchise, as his minutes per game have steadily decreased over that span.
However, with the future of Lonzo Ball in question, there could be room for White to earn a bigger role in the team’s rotation.
For White, the deal seems like a win, given that he will remain with the team that drafted him while earning a nice payday in the process. It would be rather foolish for the Bulls to just let a 23-year-old talent walk away in free agency, especially after they selected him with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft.
Things can certainly change as free agency gets underway, but it looks like the former UNC basketball star is sticking with the Chicago Bulls.
