UNC Basketball: Cam Johnson agrees to deal with Nets
Former UNC basketball standout Cam Johnson is staying in Brooklyn, as he’s agreed to a new contract with the Nets organization.
Leading up to the start of NBA free agency, the Brooklyn Nets aimed to re-sign former UNC basketball standout Cameron Johnson.
With free agency officially underway, the Nets wasted no time in making this happen.
Johnson, a restricted free agent, agreed to a four-year deal to stay in Brooklyn. The new contract will net the former Tar Heel $108 million dollars.
After being part of the trade that sent Kevin Durant to the Phoenix Suns, Johnson proved that he was a player the Nets could build their future core around. The 27-year-old quickly made an impact with the Nets, averaging 16.6 points per game over 25 games played in a starter’s role.
The Nets extended a qualifying offer to Johnson, providing them with the opportunity to match any offers that came his way. Before any offers could come to fruition, the two sides came to terms on a deal, keeping Johnson in Brooklyn for the foreseeable future.
It was expected that Johnson would get a big payday this offseason, as there were multiple teams linked to the former Tar Heel. However, Brooklyn kept him within the organization, as they hope that the young core that they have been putting together can ultimately help lead the franchise to an NBA title over the next couple of seasons.
