With the world of college basketball constantly changing, the UNC women’s basketball program has hired its first-ever General Manager.

Over the last couple of months, the talk of college sports programs adding a General Manager to their staff has been an increasing topic.

As some programs have already taken this step, one North Carolina team has joined the mix.

Courtney Banghart and the UNC women’s basketball program announced that Liz Roberts has been promoted to General Manager/Special Assistant to the Head Coach. Roberts previously was on staff as the program’s Director of Recruiting Management and Student-Athlete Engagement.

Roberts is no stranger to the UNC women’s basketball program. She originally walked onto the team as a freshman, earning a spot on the 2016-2017 squad. Heading into her senior season, Banghart, who was about to embark on her first season at the helm in Chapel Hill, rewarded Roberts with a scholarship.

Since 2020, Roberts has been on the UNC women’s basketball staff and has now been promoted to a role that is starting to seem necessary for all college athletic programs.

It was expected that the men’s team would make this type of move first, but it’s great to see that the women’s program, a team that is considered to have one of the top rosters in all of the country heading into the 2023-2024 season, wasted no time in making the move.

The hire is very North Carolina-like. It’s a promotion for a homegrown Tar Heel who knows the program (and the university) extremely well. Although we’ll have to wait and see what this title incorporates, this is a big step for the UNC women’s basketball program to make this happen.
