Former UNC basketball player Pete Nance has signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers to begin his professional basketball career.

Pete Nance, unfortunately, didn’t hear his name called during this week’s NBA Draft, but that doesn’t mean his chances at playing professionally are over.

The former UNC basketball player has signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He’ll have an opportunity to earn a spot with a franchise that knows the Nance family quite well.

Larry Nance, the father of Pete, spent half of his career with the Cavaliers organization. He was a two-time All-Star in Cleveland, as he averaged 16.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per contest over seven seasons with the Cavaliers.

If you’re unfamiliar with what an Exhibit 10 contract is, it’s essentially a one-year deal with a league minimum salary and no other bonuses. Teams in the NBA are allowed to convert these deals into a two-way contract before the season begins, which would allow players on those types of deals to spend time with both the NBA and G-League squads.

After beginning his college career at Northwestern, Nance elected to transfer to the UNC basketball program for his graduate season. During his one season in Chapel Hill, Nance averaged 10 points, six rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game while shooting 42.2 percent from the floor.

The 2022-2023 season didn’t go as Nance or the UNC basketball program had planned, but there is plenty of upside to Nance’s game that should be enticing to NBA teams. Nance will look to use summer league and training camp to prove that he deserves a spot on an NBA roster moving forward.
