UNC Basketball: Deja Kelly earns spot on USA AmeriCup Team
The UNC women’s basketball star rising senior has earned one of the final rosters spots on the United States Women’s AmeriCup Team.
Deja Kelly is heading to Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico!
The rising UNC basketball senior has earned a spot on the USA Women’s AmeriCup Team as she’ll compete in the upcoming 2023 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup.
Kelly has spent the last few days in Colorado Springs vying for one of the remaining roster spots. After missing the first set of tryouts due to injury, the San Antonio, Texas native was invited back for the second round of tryouts, as she was one of six players competing for one of the final four spots.
Since her arrival in Chapel Hill, Kelly has been a star for the UNC women’s basketball program, and she continues to be one of the biggest stars that her sport has to offer. Given her skillset, it’s no surprise to see her earn one of the roster spots, as she’s an impact player who definitely should help Team USA in the coming weeks.
The United States is slated to face Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, and Venezuela as part of Group A. They’ll open up pool play against Venezuela on July 1, followed by contests against Argentina (July 2), Brazil (July 4), and Cuba (July 5).
If Team USA advances, the quarterfinals will be played on July 7 with the semifinals being held the following day. The hope is that Team USA will be playing in the gold medal game on July 9 to wrap up the event.
It will be a busy few weeks upcoming for Kelly, but the experience will be very valuable as she prepares for her senior season with the UNC women’s basketball program.
