As expected, former UNC basketball commit Simeon Wilcher has found a new home, as he has committed to Rick Pitino and St. John’s.

It was a surprise when Simeon Wilcher requested a release from his National Letter of Intent to the UNC basketball program.

However, his ultimate landing spot left no surprises.

Wilcher announced that he has committed to Rick Pitino and St. John’s. This move comes less than a week after the former Tar Heel commit was released from his pledge to North Carolina.

Since taking over at St. John’s, Pitino has been actively pursuing some of the Tar Heels’ top targets (and commits). Although he hasn’t been able to flip five-star Ian Jackson, he did, in fact, find a way to convince Wilcher to come play college basketball closer to home.

The decision by Elliot Cadeau to reclassify seems to have played a role in Wilcher’s decision, as he’s expected to have an opportunity to start for the Red Storm. That chance was probably very unlikely with the UNC basketball program, given their backcourt depth.

It’s disappointing to see Wilcher back out of his commitment, especially so close to his arrival on campus. However, you can’t fault him for looking for a better opportunity for himself, as he has the potential to be an impact player from the minute he arrives at St. John’s this summer.

With Wilcher’s departure, the UNC basketball program still has a few scholarships left to offer. It will be interesting to see how Hubert Davis and company will look to utilize them as the start of the 2023-2024 season inches closer.
