The UNC basketball program lost a valuable recruit in the Class of 2023 on Tuesday afternoon as Simeon Wilcher has opted not to attend UNC.

The UNC basketball program was notified on Tuesday afternoon that a four-star recruit in the Class of 2023, Simeon Wilcher has opted not to attend the University of North Carolina and requested a release from his National Letter of Intent.

InsideCarolina was the first to break the news across social media. The Tar Heels backcourt got deeper last week when Class of 2024 commit Elliot Cadeau opted to reclassify to join the 2023 class. The reclassification from Cadeau gave the UNC basketball program a total of six guards and obviously meant playing time would be very competitive.

It appears that Wilcher’s request to be released from his NLI will be granted by the program and will bring the Tar Heels available scholarship count back up to three remaining scholarships, with five scholarship guards (RJ Davis, Cormac Ryan, Paxson Wojcik, Seth Trimble, and Elliot Cadeau).

Wilcher was a six-foot-four guard ranked as the No. 34 player by 247Composite rankings in the class of 2023 and was expected to be a key guard who could provide depth for the revamped 2023-2024 UNC basketball roster. Wilcher has been committed to the Tar Heels since October 2021.

Now Hubert Davis and the UNC basketball program will have to pivot once again with the roster reconstruction that has been underway since the end of the 2022-2023 college basketball season.
