UNC Football: Devontez Walker skyrockets in transfer rankings
Kent State transfer Devontez Walker has made a big jump in the latest transfer portal rankings, as the new UNC football wideout received some high praise.
In his first offseason as a member of the UNC football program, Devontez “Tez” Walker showed that he should be a lethal force within the Tar Heels offense this upcoming season.
After originally being ranked No. 23 on the 247Sports transfer portal rankings, Walker has catapulted his way into the top 10. He now ranks as the No. 6 overall player on the updated list, which makes him the second-highest ACC transfer (just behind Florida State’s Fentrell Cypress, who is No. 5 overall).
Clint Brewster of 247Sports explains why Walker made such a drastic jump in the rankings:
"Third-year wide receiver Devontez Walker (North Carolina) is a major deep threat with his 6-foot-3 frame and explosiveness on the outside. Walker can track the deep ball extremely well, and he can the size and strength to win 50-50 balls. He caught 58 passes for 921 yards and 11 scores last season for Kent State. Teaming up with Tar Heels quarterback Drake Maye, Walker has all the skills necessary to lead the country in receiving this year. Walker looked the part in UNC’s spring game, torching the defense several times on deep patterns. He rises up from No. 23."
The statement that is eye-popping is the one Brewster made regarding Walker having the skills necessary to be the country’s leading receiver this season. Coming off a season in which he had 921 receiving yards, Walker will have the luxury of catching passes from Drake Maye, as his production could be even better now that he’ll be operating with one of the nation’s top signal-callers.
North Carolina’s wide receiver room will look a lot different, as Josh Downs and Antoine Green have departed for the NFL. However, the UNC football program has added some much-needed wide receiver depth in the transfer portal, as Walker has the makings to step in as the team’s top target this upcoming season.
