Before the buzzer sounds to close the official window for undergraduate players to enter the transfer portal, D’Marco Dunn announced his future intentions.

Waiting for the transfer portal to close is kind of like waiting for midnight on New Year’s Eve.

A ton of anticipation, yet, not truly knowing what the future will bring.

For the UNC basketball program, they’ve been hit hard by the transfer portal, and have used it to fill some of their biggest needs. However, just when we thought the Tar Heels were done losing players to the portal, one more made his decision.

D’Marco Dunn became the seventh Tar Heel to enter the portal, as he’ll pursue other opportunities. His departure comes after he spent two seasons with the program.

Dunn played in 50 total games as a Tar Heel, averaging 1.9 points, 0.5 rebounds, and 0.2 assists per game. Similar to other reserves who decided to leave Chapel Hill, Dunn struggled to find a defined role within Hubert Davis’ rotation.

Throughout the offseason, Davis and his staff have added some guard talent through not only the incoming freshman class but from the transfer portal as well. With RJ Davis, Cormac Ryan, Seth Trimble, and Simeon Wilcher already in the mix, it’s possible that Dunn saw the writing on the wall that playtime could once again be hard to come by.

With Dunn’s departure, the UNC basketball program has three open scholarships to work with. There have been plenty of rumblings about players potentially reclassifying, but it will be interesting to see how the Tar Heels go about filling those final roster spots.
