After an in-game incident during the week, it was determined that multiple UNC baseball players will be facing a suspension.

One of the storylines from the UNC baseball program’s victory over Gardner-Webb on Tuesday night was how things got a bit chippy in the bottom half of the seventh inning.

Gardner-Webb relief pitcher Grant Vega struck out Jackson Van De Brake for the final out of the inning and proceeded to yell something in the direction of the Tar Heels second baseman as he headed toward the visiting dugout.

Van De Brake started to make his way toward Vega, but he was held back as the dugouts cleared. The incident also had Scott Forbes and Gardner-Webb’s manager exchanging words.

Vega was ejected from the game, which results in a four-game suspension. Just prior to the Diamond Heels contest against NC State, the program announced on social media that multiple players are facing one-game suspensions.

The Diamond Heels did not clarify who was suspended but did note that the suspensions need to be served over the next five games. It’s likely that Van De Brake is one of the players, but he was in the lineup as North Carolina kicked off its weekend series against the Wolfpack.

We’ll have to wait and see how Forbes manages these suspensions, given that this weekend’s series is a big one for the Diamond Heels. It’s possible that the team could elect for the players to space out their suspensions, or could serve them when they take on Coastal Carolina in non-conference action on Tuesday.
