UNC Women’s Basketball: Deja Kelly invited to AmeriCup Team trials

Deja Kelly will be representing the UNC women’s basketball program as she takes part in the upcoming AmeriCup Team Trials.

On Thursday morning, USA Basketball announced the list of student-athletes who have been invited to participate in the 2023 USA Women’s AmeriCup Team trials. This year’s trials are set to take place from May 11-15 in Colorado Springs.

Among this year’s participants is none other than UNC women’s basketball’s own Deja Kelly.

Kelly, a rising senior, is one of 22 college standouts that are expected to try out for the team. The team that is selected will then return to Colorado Springs in June for training camp before heading to Leon, Mexico in July to represent the United States at the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup.

It’s no secret that Kelly is one of the top college basketball players in the country, as she’s played a big role for Courtney Banghart’s team over her three years with the program. She has helped lead the UNC women’s basketball program to a Sweet 16 berth during her sophomore season and hopes to make an even deeper run in the NCAA Tournament before her college career comes to a close.

The Tar Heels’ star guard is one of three ACC players to earn a tryout, as Syracuse’s Dyaisha Fair and FSU’s Ta’Niya Latson also will be heading to Colorado.

Since the event began in 1993, the United States has captured four gold medals. They are the defending champions, as they’ve won each of the last two events in 2019 and 2021.

Competing against some of the world’s top talent, the hope is that Kelly will earn a spot on the final roster and helps her country secure another gold medal at this year’s event.
