UNC Women’s Basketball: Courtney Banghart signs contract extension
Big news was announced for the UNC women’s basketball program, as head coach Courtney Banghart has signed a five-year contract extension.
Since taking over as the head coach of the UNC women’s basketball program four years ago, Courtney Banghart has been one of the best coaches in all of college basketball.
76 wins (47 at Carmichael Arena), 39 ACC wins, 12 AP Top 25 wins, three NCAA Tournament berths, and two NCAA Tournament Second Round appearances to go along with a Sweet 16 appearance are just some of the notable accomplishments since Banghart took over as the program’s leader.
Heading into her fifth season at the helm, the University of North Carolina wanted to ensure that she’ll be around for a long time.
On Thursday, the program announced that Banghart agreed to a five-year contract extension. Banghart’s new deal will run through the 2027-28 season.
Banghart has guided the UNC women’s basketball program back to being a top 25 program in the country, as her recent teams have had plenty of success while her recruiting efforts have matched with the best programs in the country. With something special brewing in Chapel Hill, we know for sure that Banghart will be at the helm to see it all come to fruition.
In the school’s official press release, Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham had this to say regarding Banghart’s contract extension:
"“When we conducted our coaching search four years ago, we were convinced that Coach Banghart was the right leader for our program — and I feel even more strongly about that now. She is passionate about teaching student-athletes how to win on and off the court, has embraced the Carolina community, and has worked tirelessly to propel our women’s basketball program to back to the nation’s top echelon. We are pleased that she’ll be our coach for years to come.”"
This is tremendous news for the UNC women’s basketball program, as Banghart hopes to lead her team to a deep NCAA Tournament run not only this upcoming season but for many years to come.
