UNC football transfer Devontez Walker has drawn a lot of attention this spring as he hopes to be one of Drake Maye’s top targets this season.

Heading into the 2023 season, one of the biggest questions surrounding the UNC football program will revolve around the team’s wide receiver room.

After losing star Josh Downs and fellow standout wide receiver Antoine Green to the NFL, the Tar Heels will need their new crop of receivers to step up. One player gaining “substantial buzz” after spring practices is Dovontez ‘Tez’ Walker, a transfer from Kent State.

Recently, Brad Crawford of 247 Sports tabbed 11 college football players who are turning heads after their respective programs concluded workouts for the spring. Walker made the cut, as here’s what Crawford had to say about the new Tar Heels wide receiver:

"Those in Chapel Hill expect Walker to be a big-time player for the Tar Heels following the exit of WR1 Josh Downs to the NFL. At Kent State last season, Walker caught 58 passes for 921 yards and 11 touchdowns and was one of two players in the Golden Flashes’ wideout room to leave for a Power Five program (Dante Cephas at Penn State). At 6-3, Walker turned heads during the spring by showcasing his athleticism and has an excellent catch radius. With Drake Maye returning at quarterback, UNC needs a star attraction on the outside and it appears Walker will fit the bill."

Based on his production at Kent State, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Walker become an instant impact player in Chapel Hill. He has the size and skill set to be a viable top target for Maye, as the connection we already saw glimpses of during the spring will likely continue to improve with more reps together.

Of course, no one is asking Walker to be Josh Downs. However, those around the UNC football program are hopeful that Walker could play a big role in filling the void left by the loss of their top two wide receivers from a season ago.
