The UNC Basketball small forward target in the Class of 2023 Brady Dunlap has committed to St. John’s University and Rick Pitino.

The UNC basketball program lost on the recruiting trail on Tuesday to St. John’s when class of 2023 target Brady Dunlap committed to Rick Pitino’s new team.

Dunlap was committed to Notre Dame before decommitting in January following the announcement that Mike Brey would not return to South Bend next season. He received an offer from the UNC basketball program in mid-April and then shortly after released his top five schools with the Tar Heels being one of them.

Dunlap was scheduled to visit Chapel Hill this past weekend before delaying his visit to May 7th. However, that visit clearly will not happen with his commitment to St. John’s becoming official today.

There is some discrepancy between sites on where he falls in the recruiting rankings. He is currently ranked 130th with 247Sports. However, ESPN ranks him as the 86th best player in the country and inside their ESPN Top 100.

Being a six-foot-seven small forward was something that the UNC basketball program was initially in much need of. With the commitment of Harrison Ingram last weekend, that starting position was filled, and unsure what the future holds, it may be why Dunlap initially delayed his visit and ultimately chose St. John’s over the Tar Heels.

Hubert Davis still has two open scholarships left for the 2023-2024 UNC basketball roster and plenty of time to decide how and where he wants to use those spots.
