UNC Women’s Basketball lands star Big 12 transfer
Courtney Banghart and the UNC women’s basketball program made another huge splash in the transfer portal, adding one of the best available players.
The UNC women’s basketball program has made a HUGE splash via the transfer portal.
Iowa State transfer Lexi Donarski has committed to Courtney Banghart and North Carolina. Donarski was viewed by 247Sports as the No. 4 ranked available player in the transfer portal.
This is a big-time addition for the Tar Heels, as Donarski comes to Chapel Hill with an already impressive resume. Over her three seasons at Iowa State, here are some of her notable accolades:
Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year (2021-22)
All-Big 12 First Team (2021-22)
All-Big 12 Honorable Mention (2022-23)
Big 12 All-Defensive Team (2021-22, 2022-23)
Big 12 Championship All-Tournament Team (2023)
Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 (2022-23)
CoSIDA Academic All-District (2021-22, 2022-23)
Academic All-Big 12 First-Team (2021-22)
Big 12 Freshman of the Year (2020-21)
Unanimous Big 12 All-Freshman Team (2020-21)
Big 12 Freshman of the Week (2020-21: Dec. 14, Jan. 11, Feb. 15, Feb. 22, March 1)
Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll (F20, S21, F21, S22, F22)
Although her numbers took a little dip during her junior season, Donarski is a two-way player that will have a major impact on both sides of the floor. She’s a career 36 percent three-point shooter and has become one of the best defensive players in the entire country.
With the losses of Kennedy Todd-Williams and Destiny Adams in the transfer portal, Banghart and her staff were able to bring in both Donarski and Maria Gakdeng to add to an already talented roster. These additions, along with the four impressive incoming freshmen, should add to the excitement that is already brewing surrounding this team heading into next season.
