A very intriguing transfer recently hit the portal, as Hubert Davis and the UNC basketball program didn’t hesitate to reach out.

This off-season, the UNC basketball program has already landed three transfers, two of which are considered to play the guard position.

Could there be room for even more?

On Friday, rather big news surfaced, as Kentucky’s CJ Fredrick elected to enter the transfer portal. This decision comes after just one season in Lexington, as the 6-foot-3 guard began his college career at Iowa.

According to Kentucky Beat Writer Jack Pilgrim, the UNC basketball program was one of a handful of schools to reach out right away.

Now, you may be saying, “Why do the Tar Heels need more guards?” or “Fredrick has been injured throughout his entire career, why even pursue him?”

Both questions are very logical to ask, but his potential may be the thing that is enticing to programs like North Carolina.

During his time at Iowa, Fredrick was one of the best three-point shooters in the entire country. He connected on 46.6% of his three-point attempts across two seasons, as any program that lands him would hope to see him regain that form.

Injuries have also been a concern, as they have hampered his ability to produce on the court. His short time at Kentucky is evidence of that, as the wear and tear got to him as his production took a rather big hit.

Fredrick is no lock to return to the college ranks. He announced that he will pursue professional opportunities while also entering the transfer portal.

For Davis and the Tar Heels, it’s a smart decision to be involved in this mix. If he’s healthy and decides to return to college, North Carolina could be a very viable landing spot given their need for three-point shooting.
