UNC basketball transfer target Nicolas Timberlake has announced he is committing to Kansas to play his final year of college basketball.

Hubert Davis and the UNC basketball program found out that they had lost to Kansas on the recruiting trail on Wednesday afternoon in the recruitment of highly sought-after mid-major transfer Nicolas Timberlake.

Timberlake is currently ranked 25th by 247Sports in the transfer portal and is one of the more prominent mid-major players in the portal. When he entered the transfer portal in March, the Tar Heels were one of the first teams to contact him and became the favorite to earn a commitment from the former Towson guard.

Timberlake hosted the UNC basketball coaching staff for an in-home visit and scheduled an official visit to Chapel Hill. Prior to his official visit, 247Sports gave Timberlake a crystal ball prediction for the Tar Heels and most of the UNC fanbase was under the impression a commitment would come after the visit.

However, Timberlake’s visit came and went with silence. The Towson guard then scheduled official visits to Kansas and UConn. Following his visit to Storrs, Timberlake announced this would be decision week.

Most Tar Heel fans saw the writing on the wall and gave up on Timberlake committing to UNC following the scheduling of the other official visits. This is one more player in the portal that is off the board for the Tar Heels who have several scholarships open with multiple positions to fill.

The good news for UNC basketball fans is we’re still very early in the portal process. The portal is still open for another three and a half weeks and many players will still enter the portal. Carolina is pursuing multiple players and has plenty of options left remaining with several official visits scheduled this week (Harrison Ingram and Cormac Ryan).
