Long-time college football head coach and current UNC football program leader Mack Brown discussed the issues he sees with NIL and the transfer portal.

Mack Brown has seen a lot during his 33-year college coaching career.

The current UNC football head coach has plenty of experience on his resume, as he’s been through plenty of changes throughout the college football world.

However, the new NIL rules and the transfer portal are two changes that the NCAA is trying to work through, as there are still plenty of flaws in each system.

In a recent interview, the now 71-year-old believes that tampering is a major issue throughout collegiate athletics:

"“The biggest problem is tampering. Now people say well, why don’t you say who’s calling them? Well, the agents are calling them now so you can’t even figure out who it is. It never gets back to you. The players just come and tell you. I’ve been contacted by somebody’s agent and that’s impossible to trace. We might have a really good player leave Saturday or Sunday. I don’t know. But I haven’t really felt that since January.”"

Brown has been vocal about tampering in the past, as he’s been very open about other programs trying to lure star quarterback Drake Maye away from Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels signal-caller stuck to his North Carolina family roots, but some other players may be enticed to accept these lucrative offers from other top-tier teams.

Although there are some clear issues to still address, Brown believes that things are starting to settle down, especially with the NIL rules:

"“I do feel like things are settling down with NIL. There was a lot less talk about it this year than there was last year. People are having to be much more careful now because the NCAA is watching it very closely. They’re asking more questions than they did last year. We’re back on track. We got a new boss and they don’t like all the stuff that’s out there that’s being talked about. I do feel like that they’re gonna make some changes fast. They’re talking about making players ineligible if the player agrees to take some money and they can prove it. So I said hurry. It would help us a lot if you’ll hurry up and do that.”"
