Boston College transfer Maria Gakdeng is making her way to Chapel Hill, as she has committed to the UNC women’s basketball program.

Courtney Banghart and the UNC women’s basketball program have made a big-time addition via the transfer portal.

Boston College transfer Maria Gakdeng announced that she will be heading to North Carolina. Her transfer comes after a very strong sophomore season for the Eagles.

Gakdeng was a force in the paint, as she averaged 11.3 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. She shot an impressive 57.8 percent from the floor and has been a steady rim protector, a mark that was the best among ACC qualifiers.

She also has been a very good rim protector during her college debut. Over 66 games, Gakdeng has recorded 131 total blocks, as she’s made life difficult for opposing offenses.

The Tar Heels have lost some depth via the transfer portal, but are starting to recoup it. This is a big way to start, as Banghart and her staff have been able to bring in a player that has the potential to be a very big addition to the team moving forward.

With the addition of Gakdeng, along with a very talented incoming freshman class, the UNC women’s basketball program is focused on making a deep run in next year’s NCAA Tournament. Although they’ve lost some key pieces (both to graduation and via the transfer portal), the Tar Heels have shown that they are willing, and able, to find ways to improve their roster heading into next season and beyond.

Next. Dontrez Styles to announce decision soon. dark
