North Carolina Tar Heels Week in Review: March 20 – March 26

A recap of the previous week for North Carolina Tar Heels Athletics for the week of March 20, 2023, thru March 26, 2023. 

Women’s Basketball -Unfortunately, the North Carolina women’s basketball team saw their season come to an end last Monday in the round of 32 versus the 3-seed Ohio State Buckeyes in a 71-69 loss. You can catch up on a recap of that game here. Coach Banghart’s program also has seen two players enter the transfer portal since their season ended with Destiny Adams and Kennedy Todd-Williams both announcing their plans to leave Chapel Hill.

Baseball – The 15th-ranked Diamond Heels went 3-1 last week during their four-game home stand with wins against North Carolina A&T on Tuesday and taking two out of three from rival Duke over the weekend.

The Tar Heels continued to hit the ball hard last week totaling six home runs. Mac Horvath led the team with two of them. Sophomore Colby Wilkerson was 5-12 (0.416) at the plate last week for the Tar Heels, including 4-8 (.500) and driving in 3 RBIs vs the Blue Devils.

Softball – UNC Softball went 2-3 in their five games last week, including picking up a 5-3 come-from-behind win at Appalachian State. The Tar Heels lost to Liberty 5-1 on Wednesday in Chapel Hill before traveling north for a conference matchup with Boston College.

The Tar Heels split their Friday doubleheader with the Eagles. Saturday’s series finale was pushed to Sunday. Carolina was able to secure their first ACC series win against Boston College in the rubber match game. UNC won 8-3 and the Tar Heels are now 13-21 overall and 3-6 in the conference.

Men’s Lacrosse – North Carolina entered the week ranked 14th in the country and looking to gain some momentum with two home games heading into a 12-day break. The Tar Heels had great offensive performances, scoring 41 goals in two games versus High point and Providence. Carolina beat the Panthers 16-9 on Wednesday before facing the Friars on Saturday. They beat Providence 25-8! Their 25 goals in a game are the fifth-most ever scored in the program’s history and they’ve done it three times this year.

Women’s Lacrosse – The Tar Heel women’s lacrosse team was looking for a bounce-back week after suffering their first regular season loss in almost four years. Carolina was able to return home and pick up a 22-4 win over High Point on Thursday before heading into a top 25 ACC matchup with #22 Clemson who is in year one of their program’s history.

The Tar Heels beat the Tigers 17-8 in their first all-time matchup. Freshman Marissa White scored five goals in the game, matching her career high for goals in a single game. She is now second on the team with 19 goals scored. UNC is now 8-1 on the year and 4-0 in the ACC heading into the final month of the season.

Men’s Tennis – The men’s tennis team entered the week ranked 11th in the ITA rankings. The Tar Heels moved to 13-5 as a team on the season after defeating Georgia Tech, 5-2, in Atlanta. They also are now 5-1 in the conference.

Women’s Tennis – The top-ranked #1 Tar Heels continued their dominance last week by defeating Boston College 6-1 in Chestnut Hill on Friday and then following that up with a 6-1 win at Syracuse on Sunday. They are now 22-0 on the season and 8-0 in the conference.
